THE CONTEXT

Aptiv

A global automotive technology supplier, getting safety right is baked into its DNA.

The company’s solutions support systems across the aerospace and defense, automotive, and medical industries, among others, where tech failure could have huge consequences. But operating across 48 countries and 150 facilities, with more than 200,000 people on shop floors worldwide, there are many opportunities for something to go wrong.

With such high stakes, Aptiv understands that protecting its people requires more than good intentions—it requires trustworthy, transparent systems.

THE CHALLENGE

Multiple outdated systems, ineffective outcomes

Ana Ferreira, Environment, Health and Safety, and Sustainability Director for Systems and Governance, leads the team responsible for managing legal, corporate, and customer demands related to environmental and safety. It’s a big role with a lot of responsibility, and it wasn’t always as streamlined as it is now.

“It was very challenging to maintain the multiple systems supporting us in different regions,” Ana explains. “Those systems were outdated, ineffective, and far from having a centralized and standard system.”

Even more challenging, the systems collecting the data were owned and developed internally—a big lift for such a large corporate footprint, and unsustainable in the long term.

THE Problem

Data, data everywhere, but not ready to use

With rising risks to reputation, compliance, and investor confidence, accurate data has never been more important for organizations.

“From a strategic perspective, investors, customers, and regulators are asking active, hard questions about sustainability and safety performance,” Ana shares. “Harder now than they were five years ago.”

But while some organizations are still stuck on how to collect accurate data, Aptiv had a different problem. The team had the data, but it didn’t communicate across systems, limiting the insights they could pull for strategic initiatives.

Without the data ready and easily accessible, Ana’s team spent a lot of time on audits for data accuracy, checking and rechecking layers of data to make the information globally useful.

According to Ana, it took at least

2 Month

of validating data to issue a single sustainability report.

The current state of EHS+ technology wasn’t sustainable for Aptiv. Something had to change. So, when Ana joined the business unit for corporate strategy in EHS, she was immediately tapped to help address internal system fragmentation.

“That was the main challenge that we wanted to address,” Ana explains. “Especially to find a unique platform that allows us to be better prepared with data analytics and different compliance topics.”

18-Month Evaluation

After conducting an 18-month evaluation process to identify a platform capable of supporting a global transformation, Aptiv decided to partner with Cority.

The decision came down to several non-negotiable capabilities that CorityOne could provide:

Aptiv didn’t want to simply replace individual tools. The organization wanted to enable a strategic operating model.

Ability to unify safety, environmental, sustainability, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and occupational health in one platform

A single data model that supports enterprise-wide standardization

Configurability to align with global standards and local operational needs

Built-in reporting frameworks aligned to GRI and other external standards

Support for data accuracy, assurance, and audit readiness

THE APPROACH

Setting the foundation for a safer work environment

Making a plan to address fragmentation wasn’t just another action item on her to-do list. It was such an important initiative that it was the first item her team addressed with the C-suite.

Ana sums up the importance of system consolidation like this:

“Having all the information available live allows us to be quicker, more effective, and ensures working conditions are safer for every single employee.”

The initiative was mission-critical for protecting their people.

THE TRANSFORMATION

Investment in a safety culture requires intention and engagement

A lot of global companies are trying to centralize EHS+, build consistent data, and achieve enterprise transparency, but most of them struggle.

Ana explains that safety transformation can’t happen overnight. “It's a journey,” she says. For a workforce of over 200,000 people in 48 different countries, this digital transformation was no small feat. Ana’s team has taken an intentional, phased approach to implementation.

According to Ana, “It’s essential to combine two different initiatives.”

The Platform

Setting up the foundational system that will guide an organization with accurate data, and grant the ability to use that data for efficient programs.

And in parallel

Leadership Engagement

Having leaders engaged to sponsor, to lead by example, and to motivate teams to pursue the same journey.

As for engaging leaders, Ana shared her advice for her peers:

“An investment like this is not easy to achieve immediately. You need to demonstrate very openly and transparently the risks that your company may face if [consolidation] is not a key initiative for the board, the CEO, and the CFO.”

In this way, getting buy-in from leadership is a critical component of building a culture of safety.

While all of these steps might be hard now,

“In the future, it will facilitate a lot of different functionalities and capabilities.”

THE OUTCOME

Lowest lost workday case rate in 15 years

“People are our best asset. Having this rate means fewer people are injured or affected by some workplace conditions. Therefore, we are accomplishing our mission of protecting the employees.”

But the biggest wins are exemplified by Ana’s recent trip to ten different Aptiv sites, where she got to speak directly with employees and see firsthand how the organization is building a safety culture.

“We had a team that was very happy to demonstrate their great achievements on safety, giving us good ideas and measures that we are implementing across other regions as well.”
